Processing characteristics and technical requirements of extrusion dies


Like the design of extrusion dies, the manufacture of extrusion dies is also one of the key factors that determine its quality and service life. Since aluminum alloy extrusion dies have a series of characteristics, the following special requirements are put forward for the molding technology:



  • Because of the working conditions of the aluminum alloy extrusion die are very bad, it needs to withstand high temperature, high pressure and high friction during the extrusion process. Therefore, it is required to use high-strength heat-resistant alloy steel. The technological processes such as electrical machining, mechanical machining and surface treatment are very complicated, which brings a series of difficulties to the extrusion mold processing.

  •  In order to improve the service life of the extrusion die and ensure the surface quality of the product, the roughness R of the working belt of the mold cavity is required to reach 0.8~0.4μm, and the roughness R of the mold plane is required to reach below 1.6μm. Adopt special polishing process and polishing equipment.

  • Due to the development of extrusion products in the direction of high precision, the wall thickness of some profiles and pipes is required to be reduced to about 0.5mm, and the tolerance of extrusion products is required to reach ±0.05mm. In order to extrude such ultra-high-precision products, the manufacturing of extrusion mold accuracy reaches 0.01mm.


    It cannot be manufactured by traditional craftsmanship. Therefore, it is required to update the craftsmanship and adopt new professional equipment.

  • Aluminum alloy profiles are very complex, especially for ultra-high-precision thin-walled hollow profiles and porous hollow-walled profiles, which require a special mold structure, and often a plurality of special-shaped cavities are opened on a mold at the same time, and the thickness of each section changes rapidly.

    The relevant dimensions are complex, and there are many arc corners, which brings a lot of trouble to the processing and heat treatment of the mold.

  •  The variety of extrusion products is small, the batch is small, the number of mold changes is frequent, and the adaptability of the mold is required. Therefore, it is required to improve the production efficiency of the mold, shorten the mold cycle as much as possible, and quickly change the mold program. Qualified molds are processed according to the drawings, and the workload of repairing molds is reduced to a minimum.

  •  As the application range of aluminum alloy extrusion products is becoming more and more extensive, there are small molds with an external dimension of φ100mm*25mm that are as light as several kilograms, and large molds with an external dimension of φ1800mm*450mm that weigh more than 2000kg. There are small extrusion shafts with dimensions as light as a few kilograms of φ65mm*800mm, and there are also large extrusion cylinders with dimensions of 2500mm*2600mm weighing more than 100T. Due to the huge difference in the specifications and quality of extrusion dies, completely different manufacturing methods and processing equipment are required.

  • There are many kinds of extrusion dies, the structure is complex, and the assembly precision is very high. In addition to special processing methods and special equipment, special fixtures and tools and special heat treatment methods are also required.

  • In order to improve the quality and service life of the extrusion die, in addition to selecting reasonable materials and optimizing the design, it is also necessary to adopt the best heat treatment process and surface strengthening process to obtain moderate die hardness and high surface quality. This is particularly important for difficult-to-extrude aluminum products with particularly complex shapes and molds with special structures.


    It can be seen that the processing technology of the extrusion die is different from the general     mechanical manufacturing process, but a special technology        with great difficulty and extensive coverage.


   In order to manufacture high-quality and long-life molds, in addition to selecting high-quality mold materials, it is also necessary to formulate reasonable     cold processing, electrical processing, heat treatment and surface treatment processes.
