What is EVA?
EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate) is a plastic made by combining ethylene and vinyl acetate. It is very soft and elastic and it can be made into a plastic that is like rubber, yet extremely tough. It is considered to be a safe alternative to PVC. EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate) can also be made into EVA foam sheet which with the use of a plasticizer.It is the EVA foam Shunho EVA solutions made that is controversial rather than EVA.
Where do you find the EVA foam sheets made by Shunho EVA solutions?
It is used in footwear which think of the padding in your running shoes, automotive, moulded soles or orthotics, EVA foam is used in sports gear like swimming kick mats or pads, pool noodles and buoyancy life jackets, in trampoline padding and protective gear for martial arts etc. It is used as padding in sports equiments, like shin guards, ski boots, boxing glovers and bike saddles and so on.
It can be used in building equipments as well like insulation and carpet underlay and in healthcare for things like splints.
The foam craft stickers are offen made by EVA material, like kids's EVA foam toys.
If the EVA foam is safe for Babies?
EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate) is considered to be a safe alternative to PVC , since it does not require plasticizers like phthlates, at the same time it is BPA free.
But, a few years ago, it was found that EVA foam contained formamide which is used to make the EVA foam sheet soft, but it is considered to be carcinogenic and a developmental toxin. Formamide can be absorbed through the skin on people and it can also be absorbed by breathing it. Belgium banned kid's EVA foam mats in 2011 and apparently, so did Fance, however we could not find any further information on France's ban.
EVA foam was not banned anywhere else around the world, but the fact that is was banned in some European countries encouraged testing of these pad in Australia. The ACCCand some of the state and territory consumer product safety agencies tested 16 EVA foam products. They concluded that:
“Foam play mats and toys typically available in Australia do not expose children to unsafe amounts of formamide and these products are safe for their intended purpose.”
The Canadian government undertook testing on formamide as well, and concluded that at current levels of exposure, formamide was considered safe.
How do you avoid formaide in EVA form products?
Even if thoughEVA foamis considered safe by the ACCC, you may still want to check that if any EVA foam products you’are thinking of buying are formamide free in China.
Some factoies will print on their packagings, or mention on their website that the EVA foam that they use is formamide free. However, not all manufacturers do this.
If you’re not sure whether the eva foam products you want to buy contains formamide, just email the manufacturer and ask.
If the manufacturer won’t tell you or if they don’t test, don’t buy that eva foam products. And let them know that’s why you are not going to buy it, so that they’ll consider testing in the future.
